Course Information

Our courses at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 incorporate the new English curriculum framework.

Our assessment of students is ongoing throughout each year. There are also final end of half term assessments. Our recording of results and analysis of these help us to support the students further in their learning.

Key Stage 3

In Years 7, 8 and 9, students develop their speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. At Key Stage 3 we are working to build their independence and creativity through a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. All of Year 7 and 8, and selected groups in Year 9, follow the Accelerated Reader programme to enhance their reading ability and love of literature. This is a very popular part of the programme we provide.

Topics covered are:

Year 7

  • Roald Dahl
  • Celtic Myths and Legends
  • Mystery
  • Adventure
  • Independent Projects
  • Shakespeare

Year 8

  • Greek and Roman Mythology
  • Science Fiction
  • Shakespeare
  • Media
  • Dystopian Worlds
  • Independent Projects

Year 9

  • The Gothic Genre
  • Texts from Other Cultures – ‘Of Mice and Men’
  • Shakespeare
  • Modern Texts
  • Poetry of Conflict, Place or Relationships
  • Independent Projects

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 we look to develop the skills of Key Stage 3 and start to prepare our pupils for the exams they will have to sit at the end of Year 11. There is no coursework or controlled assessment component for either of these GCSEs, so our focus is very much on ensuring our pupils are fully prepared and have confidence in their own abilities as they go into their exams.

Years 10 and 11 are currently following GCSE courses in English Language and English Literature with AQA:

Homework

Homework is fully integrated into what we teach.  Students here are encouraged to read widely and are given revision materials to help them prepare for examinations. All students are expected to do at least one hour of English homework every week, rising to 90 minutes in Year 11.
